| Crowstone Preparatory School
is an Independent Day School for boys and girls from
2½ to 11 years old. CPS was established in 1946 and
has enjoyed great success in its academic, sporting,
musical and drama achievements. To this day it
remains a family run establishment
which believes in a blend of traditional values
supported by new technologies and ideologies which
uphold and nurture high expectations for each
pupil. |
|
|
Each child is
treated as an individual
and encouraged to grow in confidence, self
esteem, creativity and self-expression. Assessment
and differentiated programmes of learning serve to
target areas of weakness and highlight strengths. We
are pleased to accept pupils of all academic
abilities and are able to offer Learning
Support where required but also to challenge those
more able. Staff work hard to nurture every
child to achieve their maximum potential,
they learn to shine! In all areas our
success is due, in no small measure, to the strong
Parent/School partnership we endeavour to foster
from day one. |
| Specialist Teachers teach specialist
subjects to children from Kindergarten
through to Year 6. These subjects include French,
Speech & Drama, Music, I.C.T. and Sport. Add to this
mix core subjects taught by a highly competent and
dedicated staff and the potential is there to
deliver a well rounded education which will send to
Grammar/Secondary School confident and respectful
young people who enjoy the experience of
learning who are armed with a bespoke set of
learning tools. |
|
Excellent results in both 11+ and SATs are
consistently above the national average for Key
Stage One and Key Stage Two. Crowstone is
one of the few Private Schools in the borough that
allows every pupil in Year 6 to sit the 11+
Selection Test, if they so wish.
The majority of children not only sit the 11+ Selection
Test, with excellent results, but also a number of
children sit challenging examinations and have
gained entrance to Public Schools such as
New Hall School,
Milfield, St. Paul's Cathedral School, Winchester
Cathedral, Brentwood, Felsted, Chelmsford High, King
Edward VI Grammar and the City of London School.
At Crowstone, every child matters. |

|
| Traditional values at Crowstone support and
nurture high expectations. Each child is treated as
an individual, encouraged to grow in self-esteem,
creativity and self-expression. Each child is taught
within small classes, receiving a firm academic
foundation, but at the same time having FUN
within a supportive, structured "family"
environment. |

This is our School, let peace
dwell here.
Let the room be full of contentment. Let love abide
here,
thought for one another, love of mankind, love of
life itself,
and love of God.
Let us remember that as many hands build a house,
so, many hearts make a school.
Amen

Crowstone Preparatory School was
founded in 1946 by mother and daughter, Mrs R.H. and
Miss J.H. Watkins with just a handful of pupils. The
School was registered with the Ministry of Education
but never achieved recognition.
In 1980 Mr J.P. Thayer and his wife purchased the
School, now with a pupil roll totalling 55. Mr
Thayer left his position as Deputy Headmaster of
William Read Junior School, Canvey Island and
together with his family moved into the top floor of
121 Crowstone Road to begin a new era in CPS'
history.

Waiting lists lengthened
and soon there was a need to expand the facilities
to cater for a larger number of pupils. Early in
1982 the opportunity arose when 123, Crowstone Road
was offered to the School. The two buildings were
joined on the ground floor and in 1982, after much
renovation work, were opened for use.
The School continued to grow through the mid to late
'80's. It was on this basis and with the
encouragement of parents that the Headmaster was
persuaded to open a Secondary Department so that the
education started at an early age could continue
until leaving school at the age of sixteen. An ideal
site for this purpose was found in the former Sutton
County Primary School in Sutton, Rochford, just two
miles away.
The Secondary Department opened and initially was a
great success. However in 1988 the decision was
taken to develop the Sutton facilities as a second
Primary Department, two sites but one School. Both
sites operated very successfully for many years but
it was eventually necessary to consolidate
operations back to the original Westcliff site when
the world was swept by a global recession.
At the same time Mr Thayer's eldest son, Mr S.A.
Thayer took on the running of the business side of
the School operation. In 2009 the School became a
Limited Company. Despite much upheaval and
restructuring parents remained loyal to the School.
Indeed since amalgamation back to Westcliff pupil
numbers have been strong and increasing despite the
backdrop of the worst recession the world has seen
for many years.
